After signing to a major label at 13, Jasmine Thompson, now 19, is starting the next chapter
in her already extensive career. While Jasmine’s new music is undeniably about heartbreak,
it’s not sad or depressing. Instead, Jasmine’s songs act as a ray of hope for anyone who has
felt the same way.
On “Funny,” an upbeat, hook-laden collaboration with Zedd, Jasmine considers
the end of a romance and how hard it is to have a conclusive breakup. “It’s funny how you miss
me more than you could ever love me,” Jasmine sings on the track, offering a relatable sentiment
to fans who have struggled with similar endings. “After a relationship people always seem to come
back and want to try again and pay you more attention and say they miss you,” Jasmine says. “I had
been through a relationship that wasn’t working and as soon as we ended it they wanted to spend more
time with me. That’s what this song is about, and collaborating with Zedd was an amazing experience -
his approach was unique, gave the song an incredible energy, and really brought it to life.” “Funny”
follows the reflective “Love For the Lonely,” a track written with Nina Nesbitt that focuses on the difficulty
of sticking with a relationship for the right reasons and feeling self-destructive. After writing the song,
Jasmine connected with producer Ollie Green (Freya Riding and Gavin James), who came onboard to produce the soaring,
impassioned track, which is bolstered by an evocative string arrangement. Ollie then joined forces with Jasmine to produce
several other tracks on her upcoming EP. Her music is a point of connection for her fans as she touches on the things that
make us human. “The purpose of sad songs isn’t to make people feel sad themselves – it’s to help them,” Jasmine says.
“It was really therapeutic for me to write and record these songs. I love when I can listen to a song and wonder ‘How did
they manage to accurately describe what I’m feeling?’ I hope I can do that for other people. It’s good to talk about these
sorts of things. I’d love to think things are always sunshine and rainbows – and sometimes they are and there are happier
songs coming out of me soon – but it’s important to talk about the not-so-nice parts of life and love.” Over the past few
years, Jasmine has built up a devoted fanbase with this sense of connection and relatability. After getting her start recording and
uploading covers to YouTube, the singer has developed into a songwriter and a skilled musician whose evolution can be seen on each of
her subsequent releases. Now, Jasmine boasts 3.5 million YouTube subscribers and nearly 700 million views on her YouTube channel, and
her songs have been streamed worldwide over three billion times. She’s collaborated with various artists, including an appearance on
Felix Jaehn’s “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better),” which has almost 400 million official YouTube views, and over 1 billion global streams.
She also joined forces with Robin Schulz on “Sun Goes Down,” a track that went No. 1 in over 20 countries and has over 1 billion streams.
Jasmine’s new music showcases a new side of the singer, who counts Florence and the Machine and King Princess as her main inspirations,
and represents how much she has grown since the release of 2015’s Adore, her first release for Atlantic. It reveals a new side of the
musician, who is already thinking about what she’ll put out next.
